SWARANJAYANTI GRAM SWAROZGAR YOJANA

SGSY is a holistic self employment programme meant for BPL beneficiaries. The basic objective of SGSY is to bring the assisted poor families above poverty line through formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) a process of social mobilization followed by training and capacity building, credit and subsidy, infrastructure, marketing etc. for sustainable income generation through creation of micro enterprises. It lays stress on cluster approach i.e. selected key economic activities to be preferably taken up in cluster so that the backward and forward linkages can be effectively established.

As the Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) is to bring rural poor families above the poverty line by providing them income generating assets through a mix of Banks, Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks. The success of the programme depends to a great extent on the timely and adequate availability of credit. It is therefore mention here that the banks are the main organ/tools to success the scheme.

In Manipur, there is no regular credit flow from the Banks to enable the SHGs to take up the key activities in their respective villages and thereby hampers proper implementation of the projects under the scheme. Out of 41 Blocks in the State, 18 Blocks have not banking facilities and the matter had already been discussed in the SLBC meeting for and taking remedial measure.

Government of India released Rs. 206.64 lakhs as central share for SGSY (normal) and Rs.347.99 lakhs for SGSY during 2007-08. The State Govt. also released its corresponding matching share amounting to RS.73.00 lakhs to the DRDAs.
